Tarpons on the Beaches
Looking for tarpons in beaches will be almost similar to searching for them in the backcountry,
albeit with a few striking differences. Chief among these will be the stronger currents
associated with the waves in beaches. As such tarpons will be constantly on the move and
would seem to go somewhere every single time. This makes prediction of its general direction a
little bit trickier. Bill Bishop likens tarpon-hunting in beaches to hunting game in the wild while
perched on a treetop.
Tarpons are always on the move and will only occasionally stop at a certain area to rest
or feed before heading out in another direction, yet again. As such, you best window of
opportunity will be during these momentary stopovers.
The beach is usually shallow, making the bottom clearly visible from above. You can see
the patterns of tarpon movement from above. However, in some instances, these
marine creatures do follow the bottom contours as in the backcountry.
During low tides, tarpons will not be able to pass through sandbars and cuts which they
could otherwise easily navigate in higher tides. As such during low tides tarpons are
known to take the much longer route to arrive at a certain point. As a tarpon hunter,
you need to observe for areas where the tarpon can readily cross over bars that were
deemed shallow an hour earlier. Be particularly aware of moon phases as it has an
effect on the volume of water transfer as well as tidal flows. Tarpons push best when
the tide is at its strongest.
Tarpons in the Lower Keys
Captain Bruce Chard offers the following tips when hunting for tarpons in the Lower Keys.
Look for areas that have deepwater access to and from the Gulf of Mexico or the
Atlantic.
Be mindful of the water depth as well as light conditions because generally, tarpons
can’t see well into the sun’s glare.
With gentle winds and the tarpon is facing the sun, a dark-colored fly should be used.
Furthermore, it should be cast a good distance away from the tarpon in order not to
spook the fish and just far enough to offer a silhouette of the bait even with the sun’s
glare.
In windy situations and the tarpon is looking directly into the glare of the sun, a light-
colored fly will often do the trick. The rustle of the wind beating the surface of the water
should allow you to cast a quick and precise landing right on top of the tarpon. The
tarpon will not be able to readily see the light-colored fly if cast from a distance, so
casting it right up close will make it aware of the presence of food.
Looking for tarpons requires a basic understanding of their behavior as well as the different
characteristics of the ecosystems they are known to frequent. While tarpons can be as elusive
as winning big-time on a lottery, you will, with dedication and commitment, be able to land
your very own tarpon sooner or later.
