Some of the most exciting ways to target fish in the Everglades is with a fly rod. It is also one of the most challenging ways as well. When fly fishing in the Everglades, more times than not, you see the fish before making the presentation. With that being said, there are also plenty of times where we blind cast shorelines for targeted species. So before stepping onto the skiff for a day in the Everglades, it is extremely important to make sure you are fully prepared. One of the ways to prepare yourself is by making sure you can make 30-50ft casts on 1-2 false casts. That is extremely important when you’re fishing on the flats because fish at times can be very spooky. So taking a few casting lessons and putting in some practice on your own will maximize your time on the water.
The other ways to be prepared is having the right equipment. I always make sure I have plenty of rods for every situation that you may encounter in the Glades. There are a lot of times where I plan on doing one thing and sometimes conditions force us to do another. So having plenty of rod options is important. I always have at least two 8wt’s, 10wt and a 12wt setup. I use G Loomis, Sage and Orvis rods with Tibor and Nautilus reels. The 8wt’s are for the trout, redfish, and snook. The bigger rods are for tarpon. You never want to find tarpon and not have a 10wt or 12wt on the boat! I use weight forward floating fly lines on all of my rods, except one. I always have a 10wt with intermediate line for tarpon in the interior of the Glades, up in the rivers. These fish often roll and go straight to the bottom. So you need a line that will get your fly down to those fish.
Let’s talk a little bit about leaders. For all my leaders I use the IGFA leader system except when tarpon fishing. The IGFA leader system is having your class tippet more than 15 inches and your bite tippet no more than 12 inches. That’s fine for when you’re fishing for redfish snook, and trout. When tarpon fishing, sometimes they eat the fly deep and your bite tippet is all the way down the fish’s mouth. When this happens, it’s a matter of time before you break that fish off because the fish wore through the leader. Tarpon have a very abrasive mouth and can end chewing through your leader. When I tie my tarpon leaders I like to use 18-20 inches of bite tippet, which gives us a better chance of landing that fish. I would definitely use an IGFA standard leader if requested while tarpon fishing, this is just my preference.
