Fishing in the Everglades can be one of the most adventurous trips you make as an angler. Not only is it a world class fishery, but it offers some amazing scenery. The wildlife that you see in a day out on the water is truly unbelievable and should be on every angler’s to-do list.
Flamingo lies 80 miles or so southwest of Miami and is typically an all day trip. I trailer my 17 Maverick skiff down to the ramp at Flamingo and we have the option to launch on the Florida Bay side or the Whitewater Bay side. Depending on the tides and/or weather is what usually decides on where we will launch to fish. Being such a remote fishing destination, it is so important that you are completely prepared for a day in the Everglades. There are so many different fishing options that can be done in one day in Flamingo, that not being fully prepared for anything, can have you second guessing yourself on the long ride home. I am going to talk just about being prepared for fishing options, and in my next blog I will talk about safety concerns when spending a day in the Everglades.
Having different rod setups is probably the most important thing when it comes to being prepared for anything. The weather has a lot to do with where we will fish and a lot of the times it’s very unpredictable. There have been plenty of times when I plan on fishing some redfish flats and the wind picks up or a storm blows through and we aren’t able to fish those areas. If that’s the case, being prepared and having other rods and tackle, can really save the day. I always have at least one rod and plenty of tackle for 5 or 6 different species. Nothing worse then showing up to an area with 100’s of big rolling tarpon and no rods on your boat that could handle those fish. When I plan a trip to the Everglades, I try and down size my tackle to only a few boxes. Each box will have a variety of tackle to target a bunch of different species. I will also have 3 or 4 medium action rods that can handle trout, snook, and redfish. My other rods will be on the heavier side and be able to handle big tarpon, sharks, or grouper. Having such a variety of species to target in the Everglades is one of the main reason I love fishing the Glades. I really like to try and catch a couple of different species in a day, as oppose to catching just one species all day long.
A couple of things you need to consider when fishing in the Everglades are the weather and tides. As we all know the weatherman is not always right. There are plenty of times when I’m planning on fishing a certain flat because the forecast was for light winds, and we get down there and it’s very windy. The wind has a direct effect on the tides, so knowing each wind direction and what it does to the tide is also extremely important. For example, if you have a strong NE wind, don’t plan on fishing any flats outfront of Flamingo because there is a good chance those flats will be completely dry. The wind won’t allow the tide to come up on those flats.
When fishing the Everglades, being prepared can really save your day or make it that much better. There is such much to do in the Everglades, so why not take full advantage of it!
