A major rescuing effort is happening right now in Everglades National Park, near Highlands Beach. Shortfin pilot whales, the species most common for beaching themselves in Florida, typically live in deep water. For unknown reasons, 51 whales came in very shallow today, in which 10 have already died. The plan now is to save the remaining 41 and push them out to deeper water.
Rescuers were out today after the herd was spotted trying to beach themselves. The attempts to herd them back out to deep water will continue tomorrow.
I remember about 5 years ago, I was fishing off of Cape Sable and saw a bunch of whales surface. At first, I had no clue what they were until they continued to surface and show themselves. What a really cool thing to see!
